What is the project?
The Green Grove Project follows and analyses the individual Player and Team performance of the Lithuanian basketball club BC Zalgiris Kaunas in the EuroLeague Basketball competition since the 2017-18 season. It uses a variety of Data Science techniques and In-game indexes.
The insights of this project can be utilised by all relevant stakeholders of a club (such as its coaching and medical staff, players, management and owners) in order to track the Team’s performance over different categories.
What is the goal of the project?
The aims of Green Grove Project are to:
- Provide useful recommendations to coaching staff regarding their Team’s actual strengths and weaknesses, as well as how they compare to the rest of league.
- Understand how different metrics can be used evaluate overall team performance and how certain aspects are related to each other.
- Determine how players perform in games against teams and opponents with different characteristics, in order to adjust defensive and offensive tactics.
- Assess the Team’s and the individual Player’s performance throughout the season, and make projections or suggestions about potential changes
What data do we use?
Our team uses box-score data, as well as more complex data that cover advanced game aspects, and can be adjusted to be up-to-date, and to fulfill all requirements that a club at this level might need.
Moreover, this data is used in such a way that many metrics are combined in order to give a more detailed and accurate description of individual Player and Team performance in specific categories, such as scoring or rebounding.
What is the end product?
The team and its players are evaluated on a monthly basis, and the results are presented with the use of interactive reports which track individual Player and Team performance during the most recent month, on a game-by-game basis, or month/season average. In addition, a detailed comparison of a BC Zalgiris Kaunas key player to an upcoming opponent provides the input to compare the club’s squad to the rest of the EuroLeague.
What was the project’s breakthrough so far?
The project has identified various strengths and weaknesses of BC Zalgiris Kaunas, shedding a light to the reasons that have led to its successful presence in the EuroLeague Basketball competition since it was launched. Moreover, the Green Grove Project can be a useful tool not only for short-term purposes (e.g. post-game reports), but also for longer-term insights, such as the season growth of the club and its players.
