What is the project?
The Champions League Project (known as CLP) is Statathlon’s main Fan Engagement project.
The CLP is focused on the 2018/19 Champions League, where it thoroughly analyzed the most important matches of the Group stage, and all the matches from the Round of 16 (in February 2019) up to the Final. This was done trough the use of statistics and advanced data science techniques, that were combined in order to provide the Champions League fans with real-time interactive reports.
What’s the goal of the project?
The basic aims and objectives of the CLP were the creation of detailed real-time interactive reports that consisted of:
- The main Strengths and Weaknesses of both teams at a specific game.
- Team Profile analysis, based on historical data performance analysis; the main categories were: Shooting, Playmaking, Aggressiveness, Defensive Efficiency, and Goalkeeper Efficiency.
- Prediction analysis for the final outcome of the game; the analysis was followed by a detailed predicted-indicators-analysis of the game.
What data do we use?
The analysis of the CLP matches was derived solely from each team’s (that participated on the 2018/19 Champions League) in-game historical data, during the past three years in both European competitions (Champions League and Europa League).
In addition, the analysis for the Round of 16, the Quarter-finals, the Semi-finals and the 2018/19 Champions League Final, utilised the statistics from the collected data of the 2018/19 Champions League Group Stage.
What is the end product?
The end-product of the CLP is the real-time interactive reports. The reports consisted of every key statistics for any important match-day of the 2018/19 Champions League. The statistical analysis of both teams in a specific game was followed by the final prediction of the outcome of the game.
What was the project’s breakthrough so far?
The accuracy rate of our probabilistic prediction algorithm exceeded the 68% in result prediction while it was at least 25% more precise than the UK High-street Bookmakers in all stages UEFA Champions League, season 2018/19.
What’s coming next?
We are constantly working to improve the analysis process and the probabilistic prediction algorithm. We are considering expanding the project to even more competitions and sports.
